The King of the Jungle through the ages…
Since as far back as the late Paleolithic era, the lion (or indeed the Lion-Man) has been held up as a divine figure. The antique bestiary known as the Physiologus claimed it the King of all animals. The Sphinx, the divine embodiment of this awe-inspiring animal, was predominant in antique mythologies and cultures.
The lion's paw-print can be traced throughout history and the arts: from the English conqueror, Richard the Lionheart; to Mark the Evangelist, whose symbol is the lion; the famed fables of Jean de Lafontaine, The Lion and the Rat; and Kessel's eponymous novel, The Lion.
Within the visual arts, literature, even fashion... The King of the Jungle is ever-present.
